## Statement

President Donald Trump has issued an executive order to revoke the security clearances of 51 former intelligence officials who, in October 2020, signed a letter suggesting that the Hunter Biden laptop story bore the hallmarks of a "Russian information operation."

## Legal Authority:

The President of the United States possesses broad authority over national security matters, including the granting and revocation of security clearances. This power stems from the President's role as Commander in Chief under Article II, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution. Historically, courts have recognized this authority, acknowledging the President's discretion in controlling access to classified information.

## Rationale for Revocation:

The executive order asserts that the former officials "willfully weaponized the gravitas of the Intelligence Community to manipulate the political process and undermine our democratic institutions." By signing the 2020 letter, these officials implied that the Hunter Biden laptop story was likely part of a Russian disinformation campaign, a claim that was contested by then-Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe, who stated there was no intelligence supporting such an assessment.
